Southern Beer Tour’s Celebrates it’s Fifth Anniversary!

Wow, how time flies! Five years ago we set out on our very first beer tour! Every year on our anniversary we make a cask with SweetWater to celebrate. This cask will be pouring at our March 9th tour. So come grab a pint!

We started with SweetWater’s newest seasonal Peach, Love, and Happiness as our base beer. We couldn’t think of a better beer to represent Georgia and spring!

Our inspiration for this beer was to create a Kentucky Peach Cobbler. We soaked our peaches in Maker’s Mark. And added dried cinnamon bark to our cask.

Next up was to go to the lab and grab some lactose sugars to add. This will give the beer some creaminess to round out the flavor.

To finish it up we pitched the yeast, filled the cask, and pounded the bunghole. (its a thing, look it up, but not at work, just in case)

Special thanks to our longtime friend Nick B who has helped us make this cask every year. He is doing great things over in the Woodlands and helps keep that 420 flowing!

ATLANTA, GA (February 7, 2019) — Experienced brewer Tim McDonnell is the newest member of the Monday Night Brewing team, joining as the barrel program manager at the Garage in Southwest Atlanta.

“When we opened up the Garage (in September 2017), we wanted it to be the home of our barrel-aged and sour program,” said co-founder Joel Iverson. “We expected it to grow, but it’s been a little faster than we anticipated, which isn’t a bad thing. Tim will help us keep that growth going strong.”

McDonnell most recently brewed at Calusa in Sarasota, Florida. Tim also has brewing experience in California, working at Highland Park in Los Angeles.

“It was the perfect opportunity for me and my family,” said McDonnell. “I’m excited to get started with Monday Night and keep producing some of their award-winning liquid.”

We’re gonna work him,” said brewmaster Peter Kiley. “Once he gets ramped up, Tim will be responsible for wort production, cellar operations, filtration, fruiting, packaging, cleaning and maintenance. In fact, his first assignment was to get a good pair of boots.”

Based in Atlanta, Georgia, Monday Night Brewing grew out of a Bible study. Founded by Jonathan Baker, Joel Iverson and Jeff Heck, Monday Night Brewing exists to deepen human relationships over some of the best beer of country. Brewmaster Peter Kiley oversees brewing operations at both West Midtown and the Garage. More details can be found here.monday1

Award-Winning beer returns just in time for the holiday season

ATLANTA, GA (November 14, 2018) – Bourbon Barrel-Aged Drafty Kilt (BBDK), a slow-sipping variant of Monday Night Brewing’s prized scotch ale, returns just in time for the holiday season.

Hitting Monday Night’s West Midtown brewery on Friday, Nov. 16, BBDK will start populating store shelves and pouring at local watering holes across Georgia, Tennessee and Alabama on Nov. 19.

“Drafty Kilt was one of our original homebrew recipes,” said Jonathan Baker, co-founder of Monday Night Brewing. “It’s full-bodied, slightly smoky and sweet character lends itself perfectly to Kentucky bourbon barrels. Our first batch blew people away, so we decided to make it an annual holiday tradition.”

Bourbon-Barrel-Aged Drafty Kilt won a gold medal at the 2014 Great American Beer Festival, and continues to impress. Part of Monday Night Brewing’s Black Tie series, the beer will be available in 4-packs of 12-ounce cans. But that’s not the only Drafty Kilt variant planned. Cinnamon Cocoa Coffee Drafty Kilt (brewed with locally-roasted Batdorf & Bronson coffee) releases on Nov. 30. Plus, a special brewery-only release of three BBDK variants – Tiramisu, Maple Bacon and Apple Cinnamon – will debut at Monday Night Garage on Dec. 1.

Monday Night’s kickoff party at their West Midtown taproom on Nov. 16 includes fire pits and free s’mores kits. “It’s been cold and dreary this week in Georgia, so we thought it would be a great idea to warm some people up on Friday. Plus, BBDK pairs perfectly with chocolate,” said Baker.

West Midtown taproom to open up new hoppy experience starting April 15

ATLANTA, GA – It’s no secret the India Pale Ale is the most popular style of craft beer in America. And with all of the varieties of hops out there, it creates a kaleidoscope of flavors brewers can play with. Starting April 15, Monday Night Brewing is bringing that creativity to Atlanta, Georgia with the Hop Hut.

With eight additional tap handles, the Hop Hut allows Monday Night Brewing to brew and serve many more small batch IPAs and hop-forward beers out of its original taproom. That means every time you visit, you can expect:

  • Up to six brewery-only hop-forward beers on tap
  • Regular brewery-only can releases
  • Pale ales, IPAs, Double IPAs, Triple IPAs, SMaSH (Single Malt and Single Hop) beers, West Coast IPAs, New England IPAs, English IPAs, milkshake IPAs, tropical IPAs, fruited IPAs, black IPAs, session IPAs, and any other crazy sub-styles that Monday Night’s brewers can come up with.

In preparation for the Hop Hut launch, Monday Night Brewing added additional small batch fermenters, invested in glassware specifically designed for IPAs, and brewed a ton of exciting new beers. In addition to its normal lineup, patrons can sample the following:

Space Lettuce – a smooth, citrusy IPA
Au Revoir – a piney, hazy double IPA
And Milkshakes For All – a creamy, softIPA
Don’t Call It Hotlanta – a quadruple-dry-hopped monster of a double IPA
Find A Light – a SMaSH brewed in collaboration with Blackberry Smoke and Hop City
Other Cheek – a spin on a West Coast IPA

Space Lettuce will also be available in cans togo.

“Hops are the spice of brewing, an integral part of every beer. In the same way that our Garage brewery is dedicated to exploring all things sour- and barrel-aged, our original West Midtown facility will be focused on exploring all things hoppy. We can’t wait to share a pint with you and show you what we’ve been up to,” said co-founder Jonathan Baker.

Southern Beer Tour’s 4th Anniversary Cask

Man how time flies! Four years ago we set out on our very first beer tour! Things have really changed in the state since 2014. We’ve gone from 18 breweries in the state to almost 80. With new breweries opening every few months it is an exciting time to be a part of the local beer community and connecting drinkers to our local brewers!

Every year on our anniversary we make a cask with SweetWater to celebrate. This cask will be pouring at our March 3rd tour. So come grab a pint!

We started with a beer off SweetWater’s pilot system that’s for an upcoming beer festival. It is an Imperial Stout that spent two years in a Basil Hayden Bourbon barrel and then refermented with Coconuts.

We then blended that coconut stout with the original beer straight out of the bourbon barrel. Unfortunately, Nick broke his auto siphon during this transfer.

Next, we added our ingredients to the cask. We went with hazelnuts and strawberry puree. Then Nick pitched SweetWater’s house culture of yeast and it was time to seal it up!

Now we patiently wait for March 3rd for this Imperial Bourbon Coconut Neapolitan Stout! You’ll find the chocolate influences from the dark malt and vanilla from the bourbon and coconut. See you then!

Southern Beer Tour’s 3rd Anniversary Cask

As you can tell, I was excited about this one.

As you can tell, I was excited about this one.

Southern Beer Tours is turning three years old! We cannot thank you enough for making us your preferred method of enjoying amazing breweries in the Atlanta area. To celebrate, the Woodlands at SweetWater helped us make another awesome cask.

Nick B and I discussing The Process

This year’s anniversary brew uses the delicious Rainy Day Acid Trip Sour, a must-try sour for anyone who has yet to tour the new Sweetwater barrel-aging facility, as the base. For this brew, we removed the hops.

Removing the fruit from the cups and putting them into a cask sock

Then we added pineapple and passionfruit fruit cups to create a delicious, mimosa-style sour.

We call it Nasty Nate’s fruit cocktail, honoring an American film classic.

Come try it on March 11 as we visit Sweetwater, Monday Night, and Red Brick (we’ll have a special beer there too!) Also stay tuned for more information on our after party.

Southern Beer Tour’s 2nd Anniversary Cask

We have turned 2! Thanks to all that have come along for the ride. We look forward to many more years of being able to bring you, our guests, to more local breweries!

A couple of weeks ago we had an oppertunity to make a special beer cask with SweetWater for our upcoming Anniversary Tour on March 5th! We call it Ancho Basic Imperial Stout!

First we had to choose a base beer from SweetWater’s incredible lineup. They happened to have a fresh batch of their Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout.

Next we had to decide what we wanted to go in. We wanted to go with a Westbrook Mexican Cake style beer. We added cocoa nibs, vanilla paste, cinnamon sticks, pasilla chilies, and ancho chilies.

Jonathan and brewer Nick B measuring out vanilla

Then we put all the ingredients into the cask and fill it with some fresh beer!

Join us on March 5th as we visit SweetWater (with a cask), Red Brick, and Red Hare (with a cask). Also stay tuned for more information on our after party!
